Sound of Music

Sound of Music

Evergreen

Everlasting

I was a mere 10 year old way back in the 60s when it was the craze in town ; as real as F1 in Singapore. I remember going into Cathay Cinema under a special discounted ticket cos all school going children had the privilege. And how many times did I watch the show as a kid? 5 times? 10 times? I can't remember. And how many times did I watch as a mother? 10 times? Going through it over and over; what with every new addition to the family. Every girl of mine must watch the show...that's where they learn ...doe a deer, a female deer, ray a drop of golden sun...me a name, I call myself...and all mothers will still make their children watch ...now and always. And if you are a mother and have not introduced the show to your child...please do it.

The New York financial turmoils that are here now; come and go ;
but
the Sound of Music stays forever,
and one day, it will be as old as the Hills of Austria

So it was our privilege to set foot on Austrian soils in the Spring of 2005 and see for ourselves some of the places and sites where the film was shot.

The Hills are alive with the sound of music, with songs they have sung for a thousand years...

An old castle...Leopoldskron Castle in the background of Salzberg but not as majestic as King Ludwig's Castles in Germany

If you have watched the movie, you are bound to see these great works of Art in one of the scenes; so part of the Austrian culture and people... great artists and musicians.

A busy street in Salzberg; plenty of tapestry and beautiful needlework pieces; so tempting and we bought some as gifts for friends and loved ones at home and they cost a bomb. Nothing is cheap there...Euro dollars!

The famous Mozart Chocolates...so creamy, rich and yummy...in all kinds of shapes and sizes.

Look at the Square ! They actually play chess 'live' on the ground. How is it we can't find Squares like this back home? The Europeans know how to enjoy life or is it the weather? Tropical heat just do not allow outdoor fun the way it should be? That's why it wasn't so unnerving walking in the streets of Salzberg except you do see many aged folks like the ones in the pic below.

Generally the Europeans are of a different age group ...we have not seen so many old ones in our travels... except for Kong-Kong and Por-por la.!

Kong Kong was so mesmerised by the colourful eggs! That's Esther making sure he doesn't go MIA! Look at his rugged pair of jeans. Kong Kong actually went MIA in Frankfurt Airport where we first landed. He knows no English...but surprisingly there were plenty of Chinese there...so we finally found him after 1/2 an hour of frantic search.

Horse carriage rides are an integral part of the local tourism scene. The horses are just horses and they 'pooed' and 'wee-weed' as and when they like. There are sweepers specially assigned to clear the good stuff so the streets look presentable!

This is the Mirabel Gardens where the children of the Von Trapp family sang D0-Re-Mi. The girls in the pic also sang the song...doremifasolatido.....

The Mirabel Gardens and the Palace where part of the filming for the wedding was shot.

Girls are girls. Posers. They love that. The gardens came alive for the girls...never in their wildest dreams would they think they could visit the same garden they watch over TV day and night as kids...one of my favourite things...

Again another scenic shot of the town ...remember the Von Trapp kids sitting on a carriage to the market place chaperoned by Maria?

That's the Salzach River behind the girls...like the pic below...where the children fell into the river much to the chagrin of the Captain...the elite becoming urchins...
On the other side of the river is the building where the indoor shots of the movie were made.

The girls on the bridge across Salzach River.

Here, no one can miss this building...the very place where the famous Mozart was born. Great to see the building .

Maria and the Von Trapp children in the Sound of Music.

40 years down memory lane and they are still here. Nostalgic.

1. Liesl 2. Friedrich 3. Louisa 4. Kurt 5. Brigitta 6. Marta 7. Gretl

Great show. It's for the old and young ; fun-filled with great music and acting. You also learn patriotism, true love and the power of a woman behind a man's life. How a good woman can change the course of a man's perspectives in life and the warmth that exuberates from a woman's touch. I love the show ; and I do allow my students to watch in class... and let them hear good diction and taste different cultures. Even the boys do not mind...serious. And how many times have I watched it as a teacher? 5 times? OCD??? That's what my girls will label me.

Affirmation

It's the season of the year again.

Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

I was at Parkson Grand this afternoon alone. The husband is not interested in shopping complexes and the only daughter at home has promised a cheesecake for a friend. So no compromise - must be home to bake that cake.

When you move around alone you tend to be more observant about the things around you. I just love to be in the midst of merriment and the 'busyness' of others celebrating the season. At times you wonder why you must be scurrying around but it's nice cos you might just be able to pick some items at a real discounted price!

True enough I was sitting on a bench outside the House Of Leather and noticed 2 handbags for the price of half at the original price of one - that's actually meaning 2 for RM25.00. Hei, since it was so cheap I thought I might just get them and mind you they are not bad looking! The moment I reached home, No.3 took one of them and I was surprised it met her taste.

But frankly, I spent a good part of the afternoon just sitting on a bench watching people passed by me. A bit the...but it's my favourite hobby...watching people's behaviour.

I can't help but noticed young couples pushing babies around in prams and ...at times holding one in the arms and pushing the other in the pram. Husbands helping wives and wives packing milk powder in small cases, hot water flask, the nappies...I thought I was doing that not too long ago? Boy, down memory lane...has it been 18 years ago since I last did all those chores? Now is it time again? I hope not too soon ... dad says he's not ready, girls.

There was this little girl of about 3. Mama was feeding her little bro of a month or so old and daddy was trying to help by offering his arms. She refused daddy and insisted mama stop feeding little bro and hold her. Sibling rivalry at this tender age. Who taught little children to have such feelings ? Such rivalry lasts a lifetime. You need not watch Chinese soap operas to know it ...the latest being...Moonlight Resonance.

If there is any consolation, you out there must always remember parents love all their children and they try to be as fair as possible in all decisions. And do not fret if you think you have not been given the so-called fair share. Let you into a secret...if you are doing fine and don't need too much support you are actually prolonging your parents' life. And if your parents are helping the less fortunate sibling more , it's not because they love you less. They can't bear to see any loved one suffering. So don't misunderstand your parents and misread them. It breaks their hearts to see the less fortunate sibling being shoved aside by society; so they seem to help the sibling more. But deep, deep inside them they are so very proud of you cos you are out of trouble.

While shifting articles out of the old handbag to put them in the new one, I came across a card sent to me on my birthday last year 2007 which read:

God knew little ones need love,
So He created mothers.
With understanding hearts and,
Gentle hands that care for others.

They feed us and they scold us,
And they help us find out things.
Then later on, they step aside,
And let us try our wings.

We know they're always on our side,
Whatever may befall.
That's why we need them just as much,
When we are no longer small.

Yes, God created mothers,
To give love their whole lives through.
That's why they're treasured very much.
Especially if she's you!

That's called affirmation and all mothers love to be affirmed.

Thank you girl...mama love you.
It was fun feeding you and pushing you around in shopping centres!

Best Practices - Northlight School

The Star
It started with a need, not a niche.

Of the four schools that we visited in the last trip to Singapore, Northlight touched me most.
In Northlight as an educationist once said, "The heart of education is the education of the heart".
There are many practising principles here which I can associate with my teaching vocation.

Northlight caters to the group of students who are drop-outs at the tender age of 12 having failed the PLSE (primary level school exam) once, twice and at times even thrice. How does one help the plight of these children? They are not academically inclined but that does not mean they are of no earthly use. They are not the Hwa Chong or Crescent or MGS material but they are still children who pine for love and appreciation asking for directions in life. The 'Florence Nightingale' in the real teacher will come to the rescue.

Like all responsible parents with their children's best interests at heart, the Northlight teachers are volunteers geared up to give their best shot and service. Teachers come in out of their own accord and that is why the school is so different. They all work from their hearts making sure they make right imprints in the souls of young people.

The Principal, Mrs. Chuah, a quiet and firm lady leads a team of people to execute a great challenge for Singapore. Here, her main intention is to instill self -worth in these PLSE under- achievers and to nurture courage and strength for them to face adversities in the days ahead.

To strategise this, words of encouragement and positive reinforcement are reminded in every dominion of the school and what better ways than to tell her charges?

Notices to remind kindness especially so when they can be unkind to others in their scrambles to get what they want. Don't we do that too?

The boxes say a thousand words. It is good to live with hope- though I may not be the best I still have hope . In my counselling sessions with under-achievers , this is fundamental. A string of As is not the ultimate. It is important to know that you are important to someone.

Northlight also tells her boys that their future is in their own hands in the toilets too. Make it ; don't break it. Many boys with normal capacities too need this reminder. Some are given too good a life; all thanks to sacrificial parents who will do anything just to ensure a future for their sons.

In the classrooms they place reminders and thoughts to feed the souls of children. Reminders are powerful; that we know.

Ultimately, we teachers in school do that in our teaching; but not all is well. Students of various backgrounds and cultures carry different values to school but the bottom line is - we are all humans who need love, care, acceptance, appreciation and they need to be inculcated.

Values - the most difficult to teach and yet- crucial for survival.

Having said all these, Northlight reinforces her appreciation for good behaviour with a points reward system. I found the idea worth emulating.

A student recreation centre is established to allow deserving students who have earned points through good behaviour, commendable service or other gestures which warrant appreciation to enjoy an afternoon savouring in the best ever in the room. Dedicated parents give the extra hand in the afternoons to man the room so that teachers can be relieved of the duty. A win-win situation.

The visitors were mesmerised at the well-thought room so that recreation and reflection can be at their best. It was so meticulously planned, arranged and fun that it can only stimulate further positive effects on the students. At the helm of her education policy, Northlight still give its best shot at character building.

A billiard board for enthusiastic boys and girls trying at the game.

At a corner, we witnessed a pet's corner. All species of guppies available for the fish enthusiasts.

The place is also a centre for play stations. Very up to date and meeting the needs of the teenager; having the latest gadgets giving one no reason to ask for more.

I thought the clocks signify a reminder that can last a lifetime as the words of wisdom are so very real and meaningful. Do you not think so? These words are relevant through eternity.

The Northlight Reminder again - profound and true- reminded through a game.

Mrs. Chuah in her wisdom, while hoping to arm her students with good character traits , is also aware that they need to know how to read for instruction, direction and living skills.

Many who knock at the doors of Northlight cannot read, count and write. So under her careful planning a child must know how to read.

The 3 boys virtually could not read when they first joined Northlight. The school adopted a commendable programme by engaging a part time teacher, Hanis, who is stationed in a most conducive reading room where students run to her during recess for the extra tuition. Now the 3 boys proudly read in front of us.

Teacher Hanis testified that all you need to teach them to read is to be approachable, loving and caring. The rest of the reading skills will come in naturally when she reads to her proteges patiently. She suggested the Peter and Jane series as one good reading material.

It really brought back old memories when I also used this series to start my girls' reading career. This is a powerful series and is my recommendation to young mothers. It will spur your child to greater levels of reading achievements which last for a lifetime. I would read to my girls everyday until they read aloud on their own. Once you have managed to hit series 4a, the child becomes an independent reader. Trust me.

This is again another reminder to relate the importance of reading- this time in the girls' toilet. Reading Maketh a Man - the real truth. A truth that has been drummed into my students day in and out and a habit that will help them write effectively.

Next, Northlight embarked upon a the "Math Works for Us" programme where students acquire the foundation mathematical skills for daily living and work. Mrs. Chuah constantly reminded us that the students do not seem able to count not because they lack anything serious but rather it's the way they are taught. It's using the approach they understand and sometimes she shared that their counting logic works well with the layman for e.g. using a cup to measure a certain quantity instead of the conventional scale.

Their simplicity towards daily needs causes her to say this:

"We wanted to make a difference in the lives of the students but ended up making a difference in our own lives."

I thought the statement was so profound. Many a time I have students who make a difference in my life when they teach me to be patient, unassuming and remind me how fortunate I am when compared to their unfortunate states.

A teacher using the Interactive Smart board to create maths lessons in class. Apparently the use of this teaching aid has increased the students' understanding in the subject.

Armed with sufficient reading abilities and counting skills, Northlight emphasises on Vocational Education - the gateway to a decent living.

Students are taught retailing skills and Northlight had association with private entities to allow them to have some hours of training after school.

A retailing room in the school for the students to practise business skills.

The school cooperative is one avenue for the students to display their entrepreneurship acumen. I am also glad to say Seafield has one of the best cooperatives in the state- so well run and the students so enthusiastic, learning how to make a go at a young age.

Their saloon is impressive.

An offer for a family package - not bad.

A skill important to the hotel industry. Keeping the room and toilet in order. The sink in the picture seems similar to the ones in the teachers' toilet in Seafield!

Culinary endeavours - what better way to eke a living in life. We were informed that the teacher training them has a chain store in Singapore . Why the need to teach in Northlight? Mrs. Chuah said that the 'tauke' could not bear waking up every morning with a $ sign in his eyes anymore. His good nature tells him that he must help the underprivileged. Northlight is a good avenue to help. How nice to know that there are such people around. We want to be his friend, right?

We were served this during the visit. How kind of them. Free visit, free food and free information. Thank you.

A kitchen big and practical enough for the students to learn culinary skills.

I believe there are many other features that I have not been able to observe but one thing I do know - Northlight though only about 2 years old has made such a great impact in the Singapore Society that many from near and far have come to learn from them including the MOE of Malaysia.

Mrs. Chuah shared that parents are so appreciative that they are compiling a special print about Northlight to be presented to the teachers on Teacher's Day. They have been touched by the teachers' dedication and hard work and most of all Northlight has given a new hope and meaning to their children. After all it's every parent's wish that their children grow up to be of use to the society around them. They need not be doctors, lawyers, economists, professionals...they only need to practise right values , eke a decent living, be happy and out of trouble. That is success.

SHINE - Sincere, Honest and Innovative, valuing Network and Excellence - the Logo of Northlight - may all who seek it find it.
