No More Garbage...

The Recyclables
I have noticed a new sense of urgency among the general workers of the school. They have been diligently sorting out garbage in the school.

See, everyday they will assemble the recyclables according to types for sale to the local collectors. Can we deny them the effort of gaining some monetary returns? Of course not. They have found the gem in what others think is garbage...now I understand why we can safely say that in Malaysia as long as you want to help yourself, you can never be short of dough.

Recycle... looking forward to a grand bash on recyclables sometime this week.

Who Will Be The Idol

A Most Difficult Choice
This year is especially difficult because I love both the finalists...

Lee in his taciturn disposition is humble and has never displayed arrogance in all his performances. He is such a likeable character and fulfills the typical American image. It cannot be gainsaid that he is my first choice but after his performance this evening... I am afraid he is highly challenged.

Crystal, the gutsy one is warm and confident. She has distinctly shone in her vocals and is a hot favourite too. She can be so sincere at times that it brings tears during some of her renditions and she is Grace's choice for this season. Tonight she in her powerful chords drew applause from the crowd.

But my favourite is still Lee Dewyze...against all odds...hopefully.

Drawing Inspiration

From Helen Keller with love...

A great poet, blind and mute at a tender age... this is inspiring indeed.

For those who are able to see, hear and speak... there cannot be any challenges greater than those faced by her.

And yet, you hear of stories in school when children refuse to learn and work for themselves.

It's all ATTITUDE.

The gutsy Helen out of her insurmountable inadequacies found solutions to them because she was courageous, obedient, teachable and her first few words :

"I am not dumb now"

... should be reason why you must learn in school ; boys and girls.

Be grateful.

A Year Older

Happy Birthday Garrett

A bowl of Mee Suah in Chinese Rice Wine soup for long life...

And a cake of love for you...
Deuteronomy 5 : 16 for your keeping.

The Singpetra Princes

I call them Princes...in the eyes of Jesus.

Today I 'm gonna sound very old because I am going to be irrelevant to the younger generation.

Albeit being educated in an English Medium School, I take a particular liking to Mandarin as I have a strong association with the language ; close to Singapore and surrounded by a Chinese speaking community in good old Muar town. On top of everything else, the language was attractive cos it brought me news about movie stars of the 60s, 70s, 80s...Ivy Ling Por, Lin Dai, Ker Lan, Lin Ching Hsia, Chin Han, Ching Hsiang Lin, Chen Chen and on and on...see I sound pretty irrelevant right? However much I may want to forget them, I can't.

So, when I heard about the Singpetra Mission and how the Good News was brought to the public through Chinese Oldies, I could not tear myself away from them.
I first heard them in PJEFC and I thought it would be a real shame when I did not bring my father to hear them out...to hear their great testimony about Jesus.

Pastor Chang Han Lin and his protegee Lei Chen Hsiung has a singing mission. Blessed with strong vocals and a love for oldies , they perform endlessly for the cause of Jesus bringing good news particularly to the older generation but where God's mission is concerned they can also be very relevant to the needy... to ones who need the touch of encouragement and hope for eternal life at some point of life.

Pastor Han Lin has a story to tell. A truth which never fails to draw lives into eternity. Coming from a Chinese speaking home and having a father who is down to earth and never believes in things of the soul, it was a challenge for the pastor to convince his dad of God's salvation plan. Often quoted ;

" If you want me to believe in Jesus, show me how to get money ; no money, no Jesus..."

It is so true, isn't it? Where the Chinese are concerned, it's more often then not about the story of physical survival. Relationships do not play a big part. So when you tell of the love of God, it's almost meaningless to them...death and eternity? Where's the relevance to these hard survivors? They exist to accumulate wealth for security.

But God works in strange ways...He responds to prayers in the most unexpected times and ways.

Pastor Han Lin though the eldest was a scorn to the home when he accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour at the tender age of 12. To the consternation of his father, he was considered the prodigal son; of no use when the dad dies...no son to send him off. So when the younger brother came along, fresh hope came to the family. The best love, time and attention was on the younger boy. If he had wanted the stars, his dad would have gotten for him but not long after, such thoughtless gestures of love soon brought disaster to the home...addiction , drunkenness and the haunt of Ah Longs. Han Lin's dad may have the monetary resources to elevate the son's plight but for how long? The pastor challenged his dad to accept a relationship with Christ to put right the wrong doings of the family ... when you are reduced to nothing, then in your humble state the reality of God is shown. Does it mean everything is turned right with the magic wand? Someone once says " Relationships just can't change overnight...it needs to be worked at"...that's why Christ is called the Counsellor, Healer, Prince of peace, Comforter...situations and circumstances that were once beyond hope can once again by the grace of God be made right as once passes through the teaching and redemptive work of Jesus. Reap you must for what you sowed but the promise of His presence is there and it makes the going easier.
Han Lin's dad and mum submitted to the will of God...for by grace they were saved not by works alone... and the redeeming work began in the house. "Jesus loves you"... a reassurance repeatedly spoken and affirmed by the pastor.

A testimony so strong that it evoked the inner spirit of man and on that night last Sunday in PJEFC, I was moved once again by the simple working of the spirit...14 souls came forward to acknowledge the sovereignty of Christ in their lives.

Was the narration a story or a statement? Kong Kong asked me this question in May 2008 when I brought him to their concert in UCSI then...and my reply was " That pastor did not lie"..it's the truth. On an evening then when things were quiet and seem so simple a message, my dad stood up for his salvation ... a wait of 33 years. That's why I am eternally grateful to the singpetra Princes and am blessed by their mission.

Run by a small team of 7, the local singers have performed in Singapore and even the United States and as in the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23...I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all things for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. Amen.

Grace : " Ma, what's that on the CD player?" Ma : "Songs?"
Grace : " Eu...O... they were the singers that brought Kong to Christ?"
Ma : Yea...
Why not bring your loved ones to hear them out too? One day?

Thank you Jesus for the work of Salvation.

The Contestant

Sorry To See Him Go
Michael Lynch

Though not tipped as one of my favourites, I cannot deny the anguish I saw in his devoted wife who had stood by him week after week ... almost all the time - teary. In times of joy and disappointment, I was always touched by her silent gratitude and relief each time he went through.
Last night was a difficult evening ; in my humble opinion, it was either Casey or Michael. But I guess it's a matter of time between the two of them ; either one will have to go first.
The evening ended with such a touching moment when after his finale, he took his baby girl from the arms of his wife and kissed her unceasingly ; sad and at the same time perhaps relieved to be out of a race which he knew he was not going to make it to the top 2.

N0. 3 : Mum, you're crying ?
Mum : For the wife.

The winner takes it all.

Milestones

Mothers remember milestones in their children's achievements and chapters in life.

Standard 1
UPSR
PMR
SPM
Pre U
Tertiary
Post Graduation
And...marriages, childbirths...

Being a teacher, one gets used to the many ceremonies in appreciation of achievements in a student's career and it's thrilling somehow to see the excitement of parents when they attend such occasions. I have my share of pride and excitement too when mine went up on stage during some years of their school life and tertiary ones too.

Last week saw me witnessing the school's annual Speech Day and another one for Grace again.

The Speech Day was a simple and memorable one for some students and parents and it was good to see your protege doing fine and be ready for the many challenges ahead. I told Sara last week that perhaps the most challenging exam in terms of number of subjects and time frame is the SPM exam. It's a marathon of stamina, determination and mental strength. After successfully going through the exam, one is ready for the many more ahead of them.

The dedicated teachers pouring in their best for the children and do you notice the background of the stage backdrop and the attire of the staff? Even the backdrop artist is of supreme quality.

The hopefuls receiving their hard-earned awards and looking forward to many more ahead of them.

I attended another one over the weekend ; this time in Singapore.

The Singapore Physicians' Pledge Affirmation Ceremony is an annual affair for those who have completed their houseman ship and before being registered as a Medical Officer; they must pledge to stand up to their cause in the right manner and spirit. The Guest-Of-Honour Prof John Wong in his speech put forward 4 practical questions :

  • What do patients want?

  • How do doctors rate other doctors?

  • What does society want from doctors?

  • What does being professional mean?

In summary, doctors need to be empathetic, respectful, humane, conscientious, confident, honest, approachable, truthful, knowledgeable , courteous, accessible, up to date, be affordable and not charging exorbitant rates and always having the patients' well-being at heart. A mouthful eh?

Grace...did you hear?

The hopeful doctors all listening attentively ( I hope) and deciphering whether they have entered the right profession... hahahaha.

Ms Grace signing her life away...

Dr. Grace shaking her hand with the Secretary? President ? of SMC in celebration of the pledge!

Meeting colleagues and smiling away ... completed houseman ship...congratulations Dr. Grace.
Congratulations to the mother too...completed homework.

In the midst of the celebration, dad met his cousin, a member of SMC and he told dad that the ceremony was necessary to ensure quality and integrity among the doctors. Dad told Grace that cousin Hong Choon used to be his closest play mate in his school days and when they used to serve in the youth ministry of the local church. Now Dr. Lau Hong Choon has nieces and nephews all over in Singapore serving SMC too... lineage.
A good day and indeed another milestone.
All glory to God.
