Now you know why we are called the school of future leaders...
Every year for the past 4 years, the Maths and Science Society of the school under the guidance of her beloved mentor, Puan Chuah will stage the highlight of its many activities during the special exhibition week. This year it came in with greater ideas and colours !
The President, Harsukhpreet Singh, opted to give his maiden speech and finished his delivery after a jittery beginning. He made it anyway and congrats young man.
It was with great pleasure that the principal opened the gates of discovery into the minds of potential scientists and researchers.
Of course the vocal headboy, Kae Lan as usual is up to his tricks with his words after Monday morning's lame joke on pulling down one's 'jeans' or 'genes' to read one's genome/DNA gave an outstanding explanation on the 'elephant paste' .
What paste is he talking about? Its decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by a catalyst- Potassium Iodide which to me was of what use I asked.
The principal poured in the catalyst and I predicted it to result in gas? foam?
Yea I was right! Its lather and Kae Lan told me it's 'just a nice feeling'...hehehhehe
Today it's the official launching of a new blog for the society; go visit www.smcseafield.blogspot.com for more information and updates.
Tharveen is the guy behind the show and he pledged to upkeep and update the blog. Having taught him English in form 3, I sure am glad he has grown into a fine young man so interested in the world of Science.
Tharveen was so excited that he wore his coat inside out and dear teacher helped him wear the proper way; so touching.
Every year this Chemistry Jargon has some gadgets on distillation...
This year it is to lead the students to produce ester by chemical reactions on extractions of fruits and flowers; that's how perfumes are produced, I gather?
See colourful bottles of flower and fruit extracts all ready for ester...
The various types of ester for your smell and skin...
Apply pressure on ethanol vapour and lo and behold ; clouds !
Isn't this the principle behind cloud seeding ?
Aunty Doris Thomas the EST teacher says if and when you grow old with so much acid in your bones , decalcification will beset you and you will be dead meat.
An ordinary egg soaked in vinegar (acid) for some time will result in a 'shell less', rubbery ball which can spring here and there.
When you open it and allow the contents to be immersed in the vinegar, slowly but surely...
It will shrivel into a 'bodyless' and 'boneless' mass like this...extensive osteoporosis !
Then this group of EST students aspire to produce plastic milk ! Urg how does it taste?
Simple formula ; you can try it at home.
This plastic milk can be be made into a mould to hold food; Aunty Doris your new assignment is to produce enough plastic milk to be served to some visitors on Thursday. I am sure you are up to the challenge.
Wow, doesn't he look like one? Scientist? To be exact, a robotic one? Hey Loong Yi may be into robotics but his command of the English Language is first class; that I vouch.
Using lego and robotic fixtures for plotting and learning...

He told me that when students are bored, try using another method of plotting. Using bluetooth he says a controller of the the first set of lego will command the next controller to draw and plot .
See...using a different method to teach; young innovator.
Maths is made more interesting now...
Lovely white blooms; to be turned into shades of your choice and taste...how does one do that? Do you ever wonder how the florists are able to produce blue coloured chrysanthemums ?
Or for that matter; pink, green, beech ones?
Simple, soak the stalks in colours of your choice and soon they will be yours. The colour will find its way into the stalks and swarm them in the selected choice of hues.
Yellow turning into blue all a consequence of mix and match. Now I know how artificial blooms are created.
